Academic writing is always part of a broader conversation. It is common, in writing for academic audiences, to cite past works, acknowledging the body of work that has contributed to your present understanding.
It cannot be expected for any reader to be familiar with all of these works, so a summary is made for the benefit of the reader. The most important aspect of summary writing is simply that it be comprehensible--a summary that does not simplify is a poor summary.
Further, a summary must of course hold true to the original content of the work; a summary is not the place to inject analysis or critique. It may be said that there are five principal components to a summary: the identification of the author, the date of publication, the nature of the argument, the details of the argument, and the context of the argument.
